| A Brief History of Threshold Ministries, Inc.
In 1995, Dean Reynolds was sent to China by his employer, Celite World Minerals, to build a diatomaceous earth processing plant outside of Linjiang City--a small town on the banks of the Yalu River, bordering North Korea. In the summer of 1996 Dean’s wife, Cindy, joined him in Linjiang. Cindy set out to make a home for them in this remote northeastern corner of China. Cindy soon learned that the Lord had many more plans for her.
It didn’t take long for her to witness the grip that poverty had on the people that live in this area. Many people here were suffering greatly. The neighboring villages had unemployment rates as high as 80%. The once-booming lumber industry in the area was dying. The poor had to choose between buying food or purchasing coal or firewood to burn to stay warm during the depths of winter.
Cindy felt called to feed these hungry families. Soon Cindy began an ambitious project to deliver several 55Kg (110 lb) bags of rice to families nearby. She gained permission from the local government to personally deliver the rice. Financial support was obtained from Americans in her native Santa Maria, California who gave so generously that approximately nine tons of rice was distributed that winter.
When Cindy was delivering the rice she noticed that children were at home and not at school. Children were not attending school because their unemployed and /or sick parents could not afford the tuition. The income of many of these children’s families was less than one dollar per day. School fees, though affordable for many, were simply out of reach for the poor families of Linjiang. Soon after this realization a sponsorship program was put into place for the needy children of Linjiang and the surrounding area.
Threshold Ministries Inc has been a recognized 501©3 nonprofit organization since 1997. Threshold has over 230 children in our two sponsorship programs. We have both an outreach program and orphanage program. Our outreach sponsorship program is for children living at home. Sponsorship dollars provide the child with school tuition, books and supplies, clothing, medical attention when needed and enough food for the child’s family. In 2005, after many years of planning our orphanage, TMI Hope House for Children, was officially opened. When filled to capacity the orphanage can house 72 children. Currently we have 26 children living at Hope House. Raised in love, our children have new clothes, warm beds, a lovely living and play area and healthy meals and snacks. The children attend local public schools and are encouraged to study hard and to expect a college education if they do well in school.
Since its founding, what began as a meager enterprise based out of Cindy and Dean’s home that supported a few hungry families Threshold Ministries has blossomed into an organization that:
