April 2007 Update
Hong Tu Shan Village

On our trip in April we revisited Hong Tu Shan village. This is the mountain village that Cindy wrote about in our Fall 2006 Report. In October 2006 our ministry workers visited the village and found that the people living here were literally starving. We immediately put out a plea for donations. Faithful supporters gave generously which enabled us to purchase and deliver rice, oil, beans, flour, and fish to Hong Tu Shan. We prayed that the food would at least feed them for a month or two.

In Oct. 2006, emergency food was delivered to Hong Tu Shan village

In April we were able to purchase $1500.00 worth of rice and hire a truck to deliver it to this mountain village. The trip to Hong Tu Shan is not an easy one. From our ministry office in Linjiang it is a 3 hour trip. It begins by ascending high up into the mountains on a dangerous winding road which takes about 1 ½ hours to drive. This paved road then turns into a very bumpy dirt road for the next 1 ½ hours. These roads are treacherous in good weather and nearly impossible to travel during the frozen winter months. Even in late April it began to snow during part of our trip.

In April 2007, $1500.00 worth of rice was delivered to Hong Tu Shan Village

We arrived at the village and parked in front of the local school. All the children came outside, formed lines and stood to greet us. What a sight to see all of these beautiful children! Many of the children’s parents were present as well. The rice truck was unloaded and village officials began to call the names of the families who had been previously identified as the neediest. Families came up one by one to receive their bag of rice. There were so many families waiting. We looked at the stack of rice and wished we could have brought more.

The weather in China is hot and soon the rains will come. For now, the residents of Hong Tu Shan may be able to grow some vegetables and fruits to eat during the summer months. We are praying that you will come forth again with donations that will allow us to continue to deliver food to this village. Our plan is to deliver food every two months during the spring and summer months. It is our prayer that by late fall, we will have an abundance of donations for food. We could then purchase and deliver a large quantity of food that can be stored in a safe place in the village and be distributed by village officials throughout the winter months. We would be establishing “The Hong Tu Shan Food Bank!”
