A Story from Sherry Grant

It had been almost three weeks of REAL Chinese food, taxi ride adventures, and unfamiliar everything when I took off from the airport in Beijing with my dear friend. Home sounded so good. The trip had been wonderful, scary, educational, sad and unexpectedly emotional, but oh so necessary. I wondered how God would use what I had seen and experienced during my short visit to this enormous, culturally rich and yet very poor country. I prayed as I sat in the cramped plane full of business and sightseeing travelers. My legs went to sleep and I had to stand up for most of the eleven-hour flight home.
Eleven hours gives you a lot of time to talk with the Lord. “What do you want me to do? How can I help? This job is too big for me, Lord Jesus. Where do you want me to start?” As I began to ask and then listen, God kept showing me one little girl’s face in my mind. Every time I asked, “What do you want me to do?” He showed me the face of the youngest child I had met at Hope House for Children in Linjiang just several days before. “Her, Lord? Is it Xue Jing, Lord?” “Yes”, He said softly. “Help her, child.” I knew that in that moment my assignment from the Lord was to sponsor this precious child. No matter that she had health problems. No matter where she came from or what her lineage was. God had given me a direct assignment and love beyond words for this little one of His. I was bound and determined to carry His work through. I didn’t know how my husband would respond. I didn’t even know how we were going to afford the money for her care, but I knew that if God wanted us to do this work, He would provide.
It has been almost three years since my trip and we haven’t missed the sponsorship fees from our bank account. God has been so faithful to provide for Xue Jing. I want to encourage you, if you haven’t had the chance to go to China with Cindy, or you just don’t think that this is for you to do, Pray! And pray some more. I too, didn’t even want to go on this trip until God gave me the desire and then used the trip to save a child’s life. Since then, cows have been purchased through our various VBS programs and the Sunday School children at the church where I work are sponsors of two children from Threshold Ministries. God is still in the miracle business. How can anyone say no?
